Food for Thought - Reviews

  • I think better when my tummy is full so I heartily endorsed the sentiment behind the title of this engaging and accessible collection of poems from Chris Husband. A mixture of fun, fey and philosophy Husband puts his finger on many of the things that cross our minds in our everyday lives. Poems like “Is Soup a Drink?“, “That Should Be Me“. There are poems for all of us. And in an age where many seek to push boundaries of language and to be different Husband offers us rhyme and metre so reminiscent of the poems that shaped many a response to verse. ‘ If it doesn’t rhyme it isn’t a poem.’ How many times have you heard that! As always when I read poems I read them aloud which I believe opens up the true essence of poetry. I have my favourites - “Michelin Stars – not for me!“ which reminded me of watching Masterchef and yelling, “It’s gravy, not jus.“ at the screen! I also enjoyed “Outsider Syndrome”, possibly because I think, after reading this poem, I have it! Food and eating is a dominant theme throughout the collection but cats feature as does the NHS and life in general.
